Project proposal
Linking to my previous research on Filipino culture and girlhood I wanted to explore that in terms of
making a shrine or something similar. Combining girlhood and the chaos of trying to understand oneself,
belonging to the city as well as nature. Finding spirituality in the destruction of identity and trying to
accept peace after identifying with chaos and trauma your whole life. Following the threads of being in
your liminal inner world.

Documentation:
Initial ideas/sketches
These are my initial ideas for what I wanted to create however due to time restraints and
knowing I wanted to use the metal and wood workshops I decided to go a different direction.
These designs all involve exploring the feminine and its innate spirituality. I do this to navigate
my personal experience/the general experience of a woman and express our journey to find
spiritual power in a capitalist state.
Research on decolonising the
rosary, emphasizing the mother
through symbols of the ankh as
well as using the
properties/symbols of spirit,
earth, water, air, and fire.
Incorporating Filipino baybayin
script and our use of anting-
anting (talismans)
Brainstorming ideas
combining the shrine
idea and turning it
into a female body on
the left.
On the right are my
sketches in the metal
workshop to work out
dimensions for the
torso
Noes from my 1:1 with Jo,
thinking about curating and
assemblage, connecting the idea
of shrine to collections and
chaos/different ways to show my
art as I had been working on
paintings during the break since I
didn’t have access to workshops.
The right includes taking my
ideas further through projection
using the elements to create a
spell or even doing a
performance where I cast a spell
live with audience help.
These are the paintings aforementioned, all
works in progress. Inspired by mythology and
symbolism.
For now the symbolism is yet to have meaning
but the heart of my practice is to let meaning
come to me as I explore them further through
creating. The swan is a recurring theme and the
painting at the top made me think of medieval
ways of representing stories and
mythology/religion such as those in churches
depicting the crucifixion of Jesus in
stages/panels which I want to explore in future
work.
Torso before it fell apart in my bag,
first time using the metal workshop.
Initially I wanted to include arms and
legs as seen in the sketches as well as
a mouth and etch traditional Filipino
tattoos.
Symbolism:
Arms and hands facing the sky - what
my grandmother did in church to
receive God
Gold grills - traditional Filipino
adornment
Blue hue heated metal - represent
water and Tagalog people (taga ilog
meaning from the river)
Dirtied ribbon through body -
spiritual pain of women during birth
and menstruation/assault on the
body
Tattoo flash
doodles that
helped me to
explore femininity
more, orchid motifs
and the girl design
that I added to my
painting.
Melancholy, peace,
pondering,
softness, curiosity.
Some talismans and
baybayin clay letters
and rosary making
that I didn’t end up
using
The final installation. I decided to add a
window like feature as the wall/miscellaneous
objects reminded me of an abandoned home
which reflected my sentiments on girlhood
and finding your place in the world and
ending up collecting beautiful
things/memories to keep you safe. A adorned
inner world. Similar to a crow which is
featured in the final iteration of the bottom
painting
Nails were used to adorn, inspired by the sacred heart, a heart covered in thorns. Catholicism
intertwined with magick.
Playing around with curation and composition
Detail of finished torso and
decided to add shells to
represent Filipino's
connection to the sea and the
water element
